My mother was a Cockney born in Poplar, East London into a Cockney family.

She used a lot of East End expressions, sometimes even the rhyming slang, but this one always stuck with me because no matter where I was going she’d always say ‘Mind how you go’.

They were her last words to me before I could no longer see her.
